Transmetropolitan is a postcyberpunk comic book series written by Warren Ellis with art by Darick Robertson and published by the Vertigo imprint of DC Comics (originally by Helix). It chronicles the battles of Spider Jerusalem, infamous renegade gonzo journalist of the future. Jerusalem dedicates himself to fighting the corruption and abuse of power of two successive United States presidents; he and his assistants strive to keep their world from turning more dystopian than it already is.

The monthly series began in 1997, and reached its planned conclusion after five years in publication with the 60th issue. It is reprinted in ten trade paperback volumes. Two collections of short vignettes illustrated by different artists have also been published, I Hate It Here and Filth of the City.

Conan is a Cimmerian (not to be confused with the historical Cimmerians), a barbarian of the far north; he was born on a battlefield and is the son of a blacksmith. He grew up fast: by age fifteen he was already a respected warrior, participating in the destruction of the Aquilonian outpost of Venarium. After this he was struck by wanderlust and began the colorful and exciting adventures chronicled by Howard (and subsequently, after Howard's death, by others), encountering fabulous monsters, evil wizards, and beautiful wenches and princesses - he has travelled throughout the world and been a thief and outlaw, a mercenary and commander of a mercenary company, and a pirate. He begins building larger units of men, aiming for greater territorial ambitions, though his efforts are repeatedly thwarted - usually by the total massacre of his force excepting himself. But in his forties he finally succeeds, becoming king of Aquilonia, the most powerful kingdom of the age, having strangled the previous ruler on the steps of the throne. Although Conan's adventures often result in him performing heroic feats, his motive is more than often his own survival, enrichment or rise to power and he thus displays many of the characteristics of an anti-hero.

We're upgrading the site!

Dear visitors and comics lovers!

It's been a pleasure to be with you so far. I never thought that the site would grow in to a size like this so soon. But it did!

When I started the site, I planned it to be an online achieve or gallery of the local Bangladeshi comics. The first comic links were put up only to serve as temporary content. But then, the "temporary content" turned out to be most interesting among the visitors; no surprises at that.

And just look at it now: four hundred visitors without any advertisement or promotion (well, that, if you don't count me mentioning the site every week in my column in the biggest national daily of the country…)! But that doesn't count, does it? Most of the visitors are from outside Bangladesh anyway.

Just imagine what'd it grow into if we start promoting the site!

For all these months, Blogger has been a very nice host. I loved the easiness and the simplicity of it. It was so easy to open the "create new post" page, write stuff in it, copy the links, upload the pics and submitting it. Easily done. But that's where the fun ends. It's too simple. It misses out too many needed features.

I want to sort the posts by categories and tags; make the posts browsable page by page so that you don't have to dig through the achieves for something recent that you've missed… and it needed to looks cleaner and better. I didn't like the previous chocolate-cream look and although I this new black looks pretty cool in Firefox, it looks awful in IE and Opera.

So here's what I'm thinking we should do:

First, as I've mentioned in the earlier post, we're getting a domain name. BDcomics.net sounds nice and you guys apparently like it. I like it too, but would have liked a .com name a bit better. Ah well. We're getting that domain, but I'm still open to suggestions.

Also, we've clearly outgrown Blogger. We need something better, more efficient and something that has more features. Wordpress looks promising! It does all the things that we'd need and more. What do you say?

As for the hosting, me and my friend BDgamer has got it covered.

All that sounds great, doesn't it?

So now I'm asking you. What the domain should be?

BDcomics.com is the obvious choice. But some French dudes have already bought that name, so the next best choice is BDcomics.net. Or is it?

Tomorrow Stories

Tomorrow Stories was a comicbook series created by the legendary Alan Moore, for his America's Best Comics (ABC) line, published by Wildstorm (now a subsidiary of DC Comics).

Tomorrow Stories started in August 1999 as a collection of short stories featuring the same characters (give or take one or two) every issue. These characters were:

* Cobweb - Created by Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie.
* First American - Created by Alan Moore and Jim Baikie.
* Greyshirt - Created by Alan Moore and Rick Veitch.
* Jack B. Quick - Created by Alan Moore and Kevin Nowlan.
* Splash Brannigan - Created by Alan Moore and Hilary Barta.

An initial title in the eagerly awaited America's Best Comics line, Tomorrow Stories, was unfortunately met with much dislike from fans. With each character only given a few pages per issue to develop, it took sometime before even Alan Moore seemed completely in stride with the characters. Indeed it wasn't really until the last six issues that Tomorrow Stories really became something good. Unfortunately by then sales had dropped so low that it was discontinued.

Daredevil Legends: Yellow

Yet another masterpiece by the team of writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale(Batman: A Long Halloween, Superman: For All Seasons, Hulk: Gray). When these two work together, magic happens.

This, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful, and possibly THE most beautiful Daredevil story ever written. This TPB is about Matt Murdock remembering his humble beginnings as Daredevil, and his first love, Karen Page. By the way, the book is called Daredevil: Yellow because the original Daredevil actually had a mainly yellow costume, later changed to all red. Anyways, this book tells of DD's origins, his boxer father, his run-ins with several villians like the Owl and Electro, and of course, his love for Karen Page. With guest appearance by the Fantastic Four, just a short cameo appearance though. This story is so touching and beautiful, you'll find yourself reading it again and again. I, for one, read the book in one sitting. Jeph Loeb did a superb job here writing this masterpiece story.

Now let's not forget the beautiful art by Tim Sale. His art in here is soft and beatiful, and works so well with the touching storyline by Jeph Loeb. The illustrations really put you right there with Matt and Karen in the comic book.

A must-have, especially if you are a Daredevil fan, beautiful, touching, and definitely a masterpeice. Other Marvel books by this team of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale are Spider-man: Blue, and Hulk: Gray, both are also beautiful and touching, just like DD: Yellow. If you like this, I suggest you get yourself the other two books. Enjoy!

The art as always is beautiful with real attention to detail. If anything, Uderzo is keeping up with modern Bande Dessine writing, the Continental Europeans will love this. Those brits who don't like change and growth then read the old adventures but if you like to see characters change and grow and develop then open your eyes, buy, read and enjoy!

Superman: Secret Identity

If you're going to buy a Superman book this month (or indeed ever), I recommend this one - even though (or perhaps because) it's not about Superman at all. It is, however about a boy called Clark Kent who grows up in Kansas and whose parents really weren't thinking when they christened him. All his life he's had to endure jibes about his name, and birthday and christmas presents focussing almost exclusively on the Superman theme, just because he shares the comic book character's name. It's not as if he has superstrength. He can't hear whispers several miles away. He can't fly. Or at least he couldn't. Then one night, much to Clark's teenage surprise, he finds he can.

So what you have here is a clean slate with someone whose powers echo Superman's, but who then has to navigate his way through a real-world context of education, careers and relationships, and a real-world context of the CIA and American military, who you just know would do anything to lay their hands on someone they would consider either an asset or a direct threat to their national and geopolitical interests.

Either/or. "There ain't no neutral ground". They cannot just leave him alone, they're constantly trying to track and trick him, but Clark doesn't want to end up their pawn, and cannot afford to endanger his family, and you really do spend most of the series anxious about the consequences.

There are some writers who really don't fare well in standard superhero comics, but who shine on their own pet projects, and Kurt is one of them. This harbours all the affection and thought that he pours into ASTRO CITY, and I think much of that has to do with the fact that if there's no continuity, no context other than that of his own choosing, and he's particularly interested in the perspective of
ordinary human beings when confronted with the extraordinary, which is where this succeeds. What do you tell your girlfriend/boyfriend/wife? And at what stage of the relationship? What, if anything, do you ever tell your family? How would any of these people react? And what would you do with your gifts? What would it actually be like, to suddenly discover you could fly?

Well, I think Immonen gives you a pretty fine description, visually, with some awesome midnight scenes above the Kansas countryside, and this is leagues above anything I've seen him submit before or since (please don't base your judgement on his recent ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR art, which was vastly inferior to this). He's on colouring duty as well, and uses that to soften the forms, retaining as much pencil as possible.

Tom Strong comics

In the ongoing (but now finite) comicbook series created by Alan Moore
and Chris Sprouse for America's Best Comics (ABC), Tom Strong is a
"science hero"; he was raised in a high-gravity chamber and given an
intensive education by his somewhat eccentric "mad scientist" father,
on the West Indian island of Attabar Teru. His upbringing, plus
ingesting a root used by the natives of the island for health and long
life, have made him nearly physically and mentally perfect. Though
born at the dawn of the 20th century, he only appears to be in his
forties as of the year 2000.

Strong has a wife, Dahlua, and a daughter, Tesla, both with enhanced
physical and mental abilities and longevity. He resides in a building
called the Stronghold in Millennium City. He is also assisted by
Pneuman, a steam powered robot, and King Solomon, a gorilla with human
characteristics. His greatest foe was tuxedo-clad "science villain"
Paul Saveen.

The character is partially based on the pulp hero Doc Savage, and
along with an upbringing taken from both Tarzan and Superman, an
attitude and knowledge (and hairstyle) reminiscent of Reed Richards
and Tom Mix, and a name that is a nod to Tom Swift, many cultural
threads are represented in this archtypically modern comic book
superhero. While the retro feel and nostalgia that is inherent in the
title/character have prompted comparisons with titles such as Astro
City and Planetary (given their shared inspirations).

Marvel Comics: House Of M [Main Story]

Magneto has lost the war against ordinary humans for which he sacrificed the well being of his children. Now he is forced to watch his daughter Wanda, thhe Scarlet witch, suffer a loss of control over both her powers and her grip on reality. Quicksilver, Wanda's brother Pietro, pleads with their estranged father to help her.

Mutant leader Charles Xavier, who is unable to help the Scarlet Witch, gathers the Avengers and the X-Men to decide how to proceed. The heroes are not convinced that killing Wanda is the only solution, so they travel to the mutant nation of Genosha to confront her, in the hope of discovering what she wants.

When they get to the island Wanda is missing, as are Magneto and Pietro.

Then the world burns to white.

The heroes awaken to discover that reality as they knew is gone...

...replaced by a society in humans are the oppressed minority and mutants run the culture, ruling over all existing countries, religions and politics. A kingdom united under the house of M.

This is the main story of the House of M crossover and continues from the prelude in Excalibur (Vol. 2) #13-14.

When faced with Nazi Germany's military advances, the U.S. government decided that the best weapon against them was a person, not a bomb. With this in mind Steve Rogers volunteered for a covert military experiment that turned him into Captain America.

After a few years of exemplary service, Captain America fell in battle -- his body wasn't recovered.
Years passed and Captain America was found frozen in suspended animation. When he awoke, he was convinced to join Iron Man, The Wasp, Giant Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Thor in forming the superhuman defence intiative run by Nick Fury called THE ULTIMATES.

Top 10 is a superhero comic book series published by the America's Best Comics imprint of DC comics. Written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Gene Ha and Zander Cannon, the series details the lives and work of the police force of Neopolis, a city in which everyone, from the police and criminals to civilians, children and even pets, has super-powers, colourful costumes and secret identities. Its deadpan tone allows it to range from farce and black humour to touching emotional scenes.

The series is noted for its meticulous attention to detail and dedication to the premise of millions of super-beings sharing a single city. For example, a caped street corner watch vendor seen in one panel uses a cardboard sign advertising "signal watches", and a hot dog vendor cooks his wares with heat vision. One plotline involves a boy-band called Sidekix whose hit single is called "Holy Broken Hearts". Likewise, all other advertising, signage and graffiti in the Top 10 universe contains references to the world of comic books and super powers, as does nearly every line of dialogue.

The story is littered with fantastic creatures and comic book references that add color to every situation, but the story at heart is still a cop tale, as the police track down murderers, drug runners, and gang bangers, and deal with their own demons. As bizarre as the citizens of the city may be, their basic human motivations, strengths, and weaknesses remain the same. The book also addresses a wide range of prejudices; monsters, robots, and fantasy creatures often face the bigotry faced by real-world human minorities. The series also addresses a range of sexual taboos, including homosexuality, pedophilia, bestiality, and human/robot, although it is never "adult" in content, and never depicts any acts more explicit than a kiss.

Planetary

Planetary are an organization billing themselves as "Archaeologists of the Impossible", tracking down the world's secret history. Funded by the mysterious Fourth Man, who it is said could be anyone from Bill Gates to Adolf Hitler, the field team consists of three superhumans: Jakita Wagner, who is strong, fast and nearly invulnerable; The Drummer, who can talk to computers; and the new recruit Elijah Snow, who can control temperature.

The series occurs in the Wildstorm Universe, along with other titles such as Stormwatch, The Authority and Gen13. For instance, Snow was born on January 1, 1900, as was Jenny Sparks of The Authority, and the two know each other. Despite this, Planetary intersects only a little with other Wildstorm series.

Planetary's field team travels the world investigating strange phenomena: monsters and other beings, unusual relics, other superhumans, and powerful secrets which certain individuals are trying to keep hidden from the rest of the world. Their purpose in doing this is partly curiosity, and partly to use what they learn for the betterment of mankind. There are, however, groups who oppose their goals, and the organization has a substantial history which is gradually revealed during the series.

In later issues the plot becomes increasingly related to The Four, analogues of Marvel's Fantastic Four whose goals run in direct contrast to that of the Planetary team.

One of the series' main hooks is that it portrays alternate versions of many well-known (and obscure) figures from popular culture. At various times we are shown versions (sometimes multiple versions) of John Constantine, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Nick Fury, the Justice League, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Godzilla, Sherlock Holmes, Doc Savage (as Doc Brass), Tarzan and other pulp fiction heroes. There is even a pastiche of the modern League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, not to mention Japanese monster movies, 1950s horror/science fiction movies, Hong Kong action movies and more. This provides a rich backdrop for the ongoing story, and is similar to Philip Jose Farmer's Wold Newton family.

(In general, the public domain characters such as Holmes appear as themselves, while those still under copyright appear in altered but recognizably similar form. In some regards the series is thus similar to the series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.)

The idea of the series is to create a concise world in which archetypes of superheroes, pulp fiction heroes, sci-fi heroes, and characters from just about every possible mass media format, live in one large universe while the Planetary team investigates them and ties together the ends. As Warren Ellis said in his proposal for the comic series: "[W]hat if you had a hundred years of superhero history just slowly leaking out into this young and modern superhero world of the Wildstorm Universe? What if you could take everything old and make it new again?"

The comic relies heavily on Cassaday's detailed and imaginative artwork and it features a variety of styles of cover with no consistent logo or layout. The mysteries Ellis sets up are what ultimately drive the book, as he gradually shows us the characters' relationships, their histories, and who the Fourth Man is.

In addition to the references to superheroes and literary figures, the mysteriously unnamed "Fourth Man" may be a reference to the unnamed "Fifth Man" from the Cambridge Five, whose identity was a hotly pursued mystery for some time.

The Sentry - Marvel Comics

The Sentry is one of the strangest comic book superheroes to emerge in recent years. He was created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee for the Marvel Comics Marvel Knights line.

The Sentry hoax
The Sentry was marketed with a hoax. Comic industry magazine Wizard reported that Marvel had discovered sketches by an unknown artist named Artie Rosen of a superhero created by Stan Lee immediately prior to the Fantastic Four. The Sentry miniseries was promoted as the first appearance of an unknown Stan Lee Silver Age hero. However, Marvel had made the whole thing up and Wizard had played along, for reasons revealed in the story.

The Sentry and the Marvel Universe
The miniseries established Bob Reynolds, a borderline alcoholic married man with possible psychotic delusions, as the Sentry, a Superman-like hero who derived his powers from a special serum. The Sentry was an optimistic and socially accepted hero who stood in marked contrast to the mostly freakish nature of Marvel characters. He had connections to Mister Fantastic, Iron Man, the Hulk, Spider-Man and Professor X. However, his existence was retroactively erased by an unknown figure who tried to conceal the Sentry's identity even from himself. This was also the reason that Lee and Marvel had supposedly forgotten about the character.

Alan Moore: Top Ten

Continuing his exploration of superhero comics, Moore speculates on what would happen if an expansion in the number of people who are able to develop their desires into super powers led to the creation ofNeopolis. His world is populated by superbeings: people (and animals,space aliens, robots, etc.) who have extraordinary abilities and secret identities. Basic human nature leads to an urban society resembling today's, including the need to maintain law and order among thesometimes barely controllable super beings. Based on that premise, overlapping, intertwined stories create a kind of skewed Hill Street Blues for the cops of Top 10, the police station in Neopolis. Sometimes their cases work out farcically, but sometimes very seriously. Afterall, Moore asks, if you could do almost anything, what limits would you accept? What kind of responsibility would you take for others? Most comics series are intended to be endless, so nothing changes much from issue to issue. That's not so in this case; Book One is necessary reading before picking up Book Two. The art helps this purpose. Much of today's manga-influenced comics art is designed to convey excitement, using motion at the expense of detail. The artwork here reverts to an older tradition of elaborate pen and ink text illustration (like Joseph Clement Coll's work), slowing readers down just enough to make them alert to the elegant details of the world Moore has created. Anyone interested in comics should be paying attention to Moore and this outstanding example of his recent thinking.

It should be in a much more useful format for many people. The earlier version posted above with the passwords is not very easy to read.

Business Opportunities Weblog says that BDcomics is worth $4.5k. Yeah, right!

Anyone wants to buy the site? It'll be yours for just a quarter of that money!

Stupid technorati.

Anyway, I was thinking: the front page displays about 20 recent posts. Do you think I should increase that number a bit? (I'm not going to decrease it. Dial-up users: Just use an RSS aggregator like Thunderbird and you'll never have to visit the site again. It's very efficient. And I know. I use a fucking 3kbps net connection!)

Also, I'll say again, spread the word about the site. As you know quite often links to some quality comics appears on the site... And you don't want your friends to miss that, do you?

I'm looking for some kind of ad to put in the site. Something that will pay at least a few cents a month but will not ask you to shoot a monkey to win an iPod or offer creepy "next-gen" emoticons. Any suggestions? Google says it won't let me put AdSense on my site anymore. Stupid Google.

I'll also be trying from now on to make updates very regular from now on. Daily, if possible. So stay tuned, and enjoy! And if you do enjoy, say so in the comments or by email. I really appreciate that.

"While this may not be the most unique story idea (something kills of every male animal on the planet except one man and his male monkey), Vaughan's handling of the story is exceptionally well done. His characterizations are vivid and each has their own voice, making it easy to remember who is who from issue to issue (rather than waiting for this trade paperback, I bought all of the monthly issues individually as they came out). Vaughan also throws in some very interesting story concepts: women who used to be models now trying to find meaning in their lives, a new tribe of Amazonians, and a doctor who was about to give birth to a clone of herself thinking that it's all her fault.

Pia Guerra's artwork, while not outstanding, is very solid. She very capably imbues each character with their own individuality. She is able to convey emotions very well and her designs for this post-apocalyptic world are subtle (i.e., the world is still recognizable, but it is very evident that things have changed).

This title was a sleeper hit for Vertigo with the first two issues selling out quickly and prices jumping quickly. I assume that if you are here, you're at least mildy interested in this title. Nostalgia's nothing new. As Marvel's celebration of its superhuman history reaches its tenth anniversary, Ninth Art looks back on the mini series that helped propel Alex Ross and Kurt Busiek to superstardom, and marvels.

".....This is part of why MARVELS works as well as it does: it takes the humanistic approach that Lee, Kirby, Ditko et al pioneered in those halcyon days, and blends it with a semi-journalistic standpoint - the view of the common man, if you will.

Phil Sheldon is just that: an ordinary guy, doing his best to make a living as a photojournalist in New York (circa the late 30s, early 40s). Aspiring to cover the political strife in Europe - which would soon conflagrate into the Second World War - Sheldon pounds the local beat, hoping for a promotion, and its in this role that he comes across an exhibition by scientist Phineas T Horton, of his 'artificial man'.

However, Horton's creation is defective: when exposed to oxygen, it bursts into flame - a literal human torch. His fellow newshounds dismiss Horton as a crackpot, but Sheldon is not so convinced; his suspicions are confirmed when Horton's brainchild runs wild in the streets a few weeks later, causing a panic. Thus, the age of the Marvels is born in fire - and for the next few decades, Sheldon opts to observe the storm via the objective lens of his camera.

MARVELS' first chapter deals with the heroes of the 40s; the aforementioned original Human Torch, the Sub-Mariner, and Captain America. The second flashes forward to the rise of the modern-day heroes - the Fantastic Four and the Avengers - while contrasting their presence with the 'threat' posed by mutants such as the X-Men.

The third act retells the first coming of Galactus to our planet - from a vintage FANTASTIC FOUR story - and offers insights into how the populace of New York would react to such an occurrence. The final part touches upon the death of Gwen Stacy - caught up in the Green Goblin's vendetta against Spider-Man - and shows how that leads Sheldon to rethink his life's work.

MARVELS rehashes several of the 'classic' Silver Age stories upon which the self-described 'House of Ideas' built its foundation. Alex Ross - who was, a decade ago, an up-and-coming artist - originally conceived of the project as an anthology that would recall Marvel's past through fresh artistic eyes.

It was Kurt Busiek, though, that reshaped the idea into what we know as MARVELS today, giving it a unified point of view and bringing the heroics - which we usually had a ringside view of - down to earth. That said, I would hesitate in calling MARVELS a 'realistic' depiction of superheroes - while it looks grand and vibrant when appropriate, it's a mite difficult to suspend disbelief when the narrative involves a man who can grow to giant size, and disbelief goes out the window when faced with an immense alien demigod.

Obviously, Ross' art is the major selling point of MARVELS; to put in bluntly, it's what gets the punters in, as painted art seems more 'real' or traditional compared to the standard pencil-and-ink renderings common to most comic books. Does it look good? Yes, as Ross has a knack for capturing a moment and honing in on what makes it work. From a Rockwell-esque panorama of daily life, to a Kirby-fashion slugfest, it's technically very well executed.

However, where Ross falls down is the storytelling - for all the slick virtuosity Ross brings to the project, there is the unshakable feeling that when is all said and done, the reader is merely looking at a collection of pretty pictures strung together to form a narrative. There are points where Ross does the story more harm than good, where instead of drawing us deeper in to it, his grandiose splash pages serve to take readers out of the tale. That said, this is a decade-old work, and Ross has improved since then.

Kurt Busiek's love of comics' history shines through in most of the superhero projects he's tackled, from his own ASTRO CITY, to the recent JLA/AVENGERS event series. MARVELS - thankfully - avoids being a dry recitation of minutiae and trivia, as through the eyes of Phil Sheldon, Busiek takes the reader on a tour through the highlights of Marvel history with both zest and respect.

With the Marvels themselves serving as supporting characters, Sheldon, his family and his associates come to the fore, and they do come across as 'real' people, doing their best to live their lives in a world where aliens, super villains and 'evil' mutants are as commonplace as celebrities and sports stars. The script is MARVELS' true strength, and is easily the equal of Ross' art, even bettering it in places.

The best kind of cover version is one that adds something new to a familiar song, rather than slavishly recreating it or mutilating it beyond recognition. MARVELS manages to hit that note just right with its mix of nostalgia and insight. For long-time Marvel fans, it's very much a collection of familiar places and faces, but with the benefit of Busiek and Ross' hindsight, you just might find yourself seeing them with new eyes...."

Dear Visitors,

I'm working with the site's theme now. It's going to be more black,
more non-bloggish and with white/yellow text. Kinda like The Best Page

So, if you suddenly find that the site is looking really ugly, it's

Marvel 1602 -- more commonly known simply as 1602 -- was an 8-issue mini-series published in 2003-2004. The series was written by Neil Gaiman, who had never before written for Marvel despite his extremely celebrated status in both comics and novels -- but who struck a deal with Marvel to write a mini-series, the profits of which would be donated to the lawsuit fighting Todd McFarlane over the rights to Miracleman. Assigned to the project was the artistic team of the hit mini-series Origin: Andy Kubert and Richard Isanove, the latter of which provided digital colors with gradations half mimicking painting. Marvel imposed near-absolute secrecy over the project, originally planned for 2002 release, even through the delays that moved the series to the 2003 schedule.

Back in the early 1960s, Marvel Comics revolutionized and redefined the superhero genre. Amazing Spider-man, Uncanny X-Men, Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, Daredevil, Doctor Strange - within the span of five years, a dozen or so titles were launched that continue to this day. Of course, the stories within reflected the changing times; over the years, Marvel's characters have continued to change, and are just as relevant in the new millennium as they were four decades ago. But, what if the Marvel-verse had happened in another time, in another place? It's been imagined before, in fits and starts, from the occasional What If? one-shot, to the long-dead 2099 family of titles. Now, Neil Gaiman (creator of the DC title Sandman and author of the award-winning novel American Gods), in collaboration with artists Andy Kubert, Richard Isanove, and Scott McKowen, is putting a fresh spin, hopefully, on Marvel's beloved heroes and villains.

1602, an eight-issue miniseries debuting August 13, 2003, takes place in Europe at a time of great change. The Catholic Church's Inquisition is pursuing and rounding up "witchbreed", strange individuals with all sorts of unexplained abilities. Many of the witchbreed flee to the relative safety of England, where they are taken under the wing of Carlos Javier, an expatriate Spaniard with extraordinary abilities of his own. An elderly Queen Elizabeth sits on the throne of England - her ministers include Sir Nicholas Fury, her Minister of Intelligence, and Dr. Stephen Strange, her Court Physician and Magician. As issue #1 begins, Fury sends a blind Irish balladeer named Matthew Murdock to Europe to retrieve, from the last of the Templars, a mysterious item that may be either weapon or treasure. Unfortunately, this item has also come to the attention of Count Otto von Doom (also called The Handsome), ruler of Latveria.
All sorts of other odd things are going on, with strange weather, rumors of the end of the world, and a girl named Virginia Dare setting sail for England from the Roanoke Colony.

Gaiman got the idea for 1602 while participating in a comic convention in Venice, Italy, not long after the events of September 11th. He'd been mulling over the idea of doing a miniseries for Marvel, but by that time, he confesses, he didn't want anything with "skyscrapers, guns, bombs or planes in it. And the idea for 1602 fell straight into my head." Gaiman repeatedly insists that 1602 isn't a What If?, or anything like DC's Elseworlds - a puzzling claim since that's exactly what it is! The fact that it's a more comprehensive re-imagining than most such stories doesn't really change its "What If-ness". Says Gaiman: "Read it as a puzzle or and adventure. Things will become apparent as the story goes on."

Daredevil Legends Vol. 3: The Man Without Fear

"I have always been a DC fan first, but what's good is good and this is really good. They have to put this back in print because it is one of greatest comics Marvel ever published. It has a fast-paced cinematic style similar to the one Frank Miller used in Batman Year One and Ronin. I am not a big fan of John Romita Junior, but his style was perfect for this story. Its obvious that both Miller and Romita Jr worked very hard on this. Daredevil's origin has been told before but when you read this you don't feel like you are reading rehashed material. There are plenty of new plots and ideas to keep it interesting throughout. As usual, the character interplay between Matt Murdock and Electra is excellent and very foreboding since we already know what the future has in store for her."

Wolverine Comic - Typhoid Kiss

Typhoid Mary is very much Ann Nocenti's own character. She embodies all of the feminist commentary that Nocenti usually injects into her work. As a result, Typhoid has tagged along with Nocenti around the Marvel Universe, interacting with a variety of characters, such as Daredevil and Spider-Man. In this short graphic novel, she begins a love/hate relationship with another prominent Marvel male, Wolverine, and the results are mixed.

Typhoid's Kiss goes deeper into the past of Typhoid Mary. As she searches for the people responsible for her mentally deranged state, she encounters Wolverine, who is on a similar search. Convinced that they are after the same people, they decide to look for answers together, while Wolverine tries to understand what kind of woman he has gotten himself involved with. As is typical in a relationship with any male for Typhoid, she shows affection for Wolverine one moment and attacks him the next as her two personalities battle for control.

Nocenti is an excellent writer while writing both Wolverine and her own character, Typhoid. Of all the Typhoid Mary material I've read, this book focuses more on her past than any other, rather than dwelling in her own psychosis. While this is a nice change of pace, and helps add depth to the character, the character works much better in an atmosphere of complete insanity, such as in the 1996 Typhoid limited series.

What really detracts from the book is the artwork. While it is not inherently bad, I don't think it works for this kind of book. It may, in fact, be suited to one of Typhoid's more incoherent, psychotic stories. The use of panels is often abandoned for a pattern of figures and illustrations that float free-form instead. While I can see the application for this kind of style, it doesn't work in a story that is so heavily focused on character exposition and story. I think this book could have used a more traditional style. Also, the art looks like old-fashioned horror comic art-- which isn't bad, just not my taste.

While it is one of the lesser Typhoid Mary stories I've read, due mainly to the art, Typhoid's Kiss is worth reading as either a Typhoid or a Wolverine fan. It explores the backgrounds of both characters and provides a solid story in the process.

Continuing his exploration of superhero comics, Moore speculates on what would happen if an expansion in the number of people who are able to develop their desires into super powers led to the creation ofNeopolis. His world is populated by superbeings: people (and animals,space aliens, robots, etc.) who have extraordinary abilities and secret identities. Basic human nature leads to an urban society resembling today's, including the need to maintain law and order among thesometimes barely controllable super beings. Based on that premise, overlapping, intertwined stories create a kind of skewed Hill Street Blues for the cops of Top 10, the police station in Neopolis. Sometimes their cases work out farcically, but sometimes very seriously. Afterall, Moore asks, if you could do almost anything, what limits would you accept? What kind of responsibility would you take for others? Most comics series are intended to be endless, so nothing changes much from issue to issue. That's not so in this case; Book One is necessary reading before picking up Book Two. The art helps this purpose. Much of today's manga-influenced comics art is designed to convey excitement, using motion at the expense of detail. The artwork here reverts to an older tradition of elaborate pen and ink text illustration (like Joseph Clement Coll's work), slowing readers down just enough to make them alert to the elegant details of the world Moore has created. Anyone interested in comics should be paying attention to Moore and this outstanding example of his recent thinking.

Alan Moore's Supreme

The Supreme comic book series was started in 1992 by Rob Liefeld. One of Image Comics' founding members, Rob created many titles for the publisher, including this, his own version of Superman. The title continued under various writers and artists (all under the Liefled art influence) until issue 41. British comic book writer Alan Moore took over the title from then onwards, and reintroduced the characters as if starting the series from fresh. The series under Moore's direction featured 'flashback' chapters: introducing the rich and varied history of the character that Alan Moore had created for Supreme. The series gained critical and some sales success: it continued with the same team after Liefeld moved all of his titles to his own publishing house... twice! Eventually, in 1998, the comic market suffered a slowdown, and Liefeld as a publisher had run out of finances. All of the titles were suspended, and despite a short lived revival a year later the character's last adventures appeared in 2000.

The Complete D.R. & Quinch

D. R. and Quinch originally appeared in a British comic book/magazine called "2000 AD". (The same publication that spawned "Judge Dredd", among others.) It was written by Alan Moore, one of the better comic book writers of all time. (He is known for such comics as "From Hell" and "League of Extrordinary Gentlemen" (both made into films), as well as "The Watchmen", making "Swamp Thing" into an interesting comic, among others. This is one of his lesser known works.

D. R. and Quinch are a couple of alien juvenile delinquents that make anyone out of the "Wild Bunch" look like Prozac munching vegitarians. They maim and kill entire civilizations just for the fun of it. However, the destruction is so over the top and the targets of satire so broad that it is not just mayhem for the sake of mayhem.

Alan Davis' art adds to the atmosphere. His aliens are all bizzare creatures that have traits that you will still recognize. (There is a pretty savage parody of Marlin Brando in one of the stories.)

I'm rather tired with the limited features of Blogger. No "next page", no catagory support, no search feature. And too much of it is not customizable. I want a proper CMS, dammit!

Anyway, as much as I love the skins and designs from Blog.com, it's just not possible for me move over there. At least not now. The disadvantages of moving over here currently outweighs the advantages.

Doonesbury Comic Strip Collection

The comic strip was a continuation of Bull Tales, which appeared in the Yale University student newspaper the Yale Daily News beginning September 1968. It focused on local campus events at Yale.
As Doonesbury, the strip debuted as a daily strip in about two dozen newspapers on October 26, 1970, the first strip from the Universal Press Syndicate. A Sunday strip began on March 21, 1971. It became well known for its social and political (usually liberal) commentary, always timely, and peppered with wry and ironic humor. It is presently syndicated in approximately 1,400 newspapers worldwide. The decision, on September 12, 2005 to drop Doonesbury from The Guardian (UK) was reversed less than 24 hours later, after the strip's followers voiced strong discontent.

Like Little Orphan Annie and Pogo before it, Doonesbury blurred the distinction between editorial cartoon and the funny pages. In 1975, the strip won Trudeau a Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning, the first strip cartoon to be so honored. President Gerald Ford acknowledged the stature of the comic strip in the 1970s, saying "There are only three major vehicles to keep us informed as to what is going on in Washington: the electronic media, the print media, and Doonesbury — not necessarily in that order."

The strip underwent a significant change after Trudeau returned to it from a 22 month hiatus (from January 1983 to October 1984), during which he helped create a Doonesbury Broadway production. Before the break in the strip, the characters were eternal college students, living in a commune together near an unnamed university modelled after Trudeau's alma mater. When the strip resumed, the main characters had all graduated, most had moved, and Michael had married his girlfriend JJ. Since then, the main characters' age and career development has tracked that of standard media portrayals of baby boomers, with jobs in advertising, law enforcement, and the dot-com boom.

Wendon Blake shows himself to be a very good instructor, but as is true of most of his works, his books generally are too brief, too short treatments of drawing, whether figure, portraiture or painting. This book, for example, contains only 175 illustrations. When other books offer much more illustration, it becomes difficult to rate "Portrait Drawing" higher. What is there though, is quite good.

I recieved a copy of your book through my art teacher, Mr. David Autry, at Fort Myers High School. Normally I only work with clay, but last year I drew a picture of an evil looking skull with three swords going through the top of its head. The color drawing of that won third place at an art show in town. I had also made a full sculpture of the skull out of clay, but I put brains on the top of its head, and veins at the side of its face. It turned out quite well and took second place at a state level Anyway, I decided that I wanted to go back to learning how to draw real looking portraits. I tried to draw a picture of my girlfriend, but I got stuck on the nose, so my art teacher gave me a few tips and let me borrow his copy of the book. I am glad he did, cause I personally think that for my first time doing portrait art, I did pretty good. Even my girlfriend, boss, and taecher were all impressed. If there are more books on the same things, that are just as good, I would be interested in hearing about them. I am very excited about my new talent that I have found, and like to be able to improve and better my skills that I have achieved. Shane E. Jones

Describing where V for Vendetta lies in the comics cannon is tricky. Without wanting to over-state its importance, this particular reviewer considers it as fascinating and enjoyable a piece of serious science fiction as George Orwell's 1984 and Rildey Scott's Blade Runner. On our first reading, over 10 years ago, it really felt that big, that important and that much of a classic. Rereading it, despite the fact that the dark near-future predictions remain thankfully off mark, the distopian vision remains as horrific and potent as ever.

We won't expose too much of the story, as the unfurling mystery is a roller-coaster ride of twists and turns. It's set in a fascist, post-apocalyptic

Britain

, with a cowed population ruled by a police state that, like Orwell's, is always watching. Like a modern day Guy Fawkes, the story's lead character (known only as 'V') is committed to bringing down the government of his day. We see his plans unfold through the eyes of Evey Hammond, an innocent and impressionable young woman V rescues from the clutches the corrupt police force.

Because all culture is controlled by the state, V is a cultural oasis, allowing Moore to flex his erudite muscles, quoting liberally from literature, music and other media. This can be overwhelming at times, though it serves the purpose of enhancing the stark difference between the sparse official media controlled by the state and church, and the rich cultural heritage that is kept hidden from the populace.

David Lloyd uses gorgeous subtle shading throughout the book, creating a gloomy London bathed in an inky wash. At times this can evoke a sense of noir thirties nostalgia, again showing the debt it owes to George Orwell, while simultaneously twisting everything into a gloomy futuristic world of overt control.

This is book has an eloquence and beauty to it, stemming from both the writing and the artwork, both of which are at the peak of their craft. The book remains one of Alan Moore's finest works, no mean feat considering we consider Moore to be up there amongst the all-time best writers to grace comics with their work. If you're interested in the medium, this book is an absolute must. And if you're new to comics, this provides an excellent place to start for anyone who likes edgy science fiction thrillers, especially if they like their sci-fi to come with a little politics, a little culture and the odd explosion.

HellBoy - The Chained Coffin and others

Mike Mignola's first compilation graphic shorts is titled The Chained Coffin and Others. The stories within were compiled from sources such as the Dark Horse Presents comic issues all the way to promotional issue of the comic catalogue Diamond Comics. The one difference between those issues and this compilation was the coloring. The illustrated shorts where in black and white when they first appeared in those issues, but in this compilation book they have been retouched with bold primary colors.

Mignola wrote and drew all the shorts included in Chained Coffin and Others. The coloring he'd done for all the shorts lives up to the previous Hellboy books. There's some inconsistency to the look of each stories artwork, but that's due to some of them being drawn early in Hellboy's history. Some of these stories were done even before the Seed of Destruction story.

The moguls expect crowds in Kill Bill, if not Pulp Fiction, numbers, and many of those viewers will be the sort of obsessive, repeat-viewing fanatics who will seek out this hardcover geeks' guide.

Black Orchid

About the same time that Neil Gaiman took a little-known hero called
the Sandman and created the rich mythology of Dream and the Endless,
he reinvented another obscure character, Black Orchid, a plant-based
heroine with ties to the likes of Poison Ivy and Swamp Thing. In this
three-part story, Gaiman gives a whole new slant to the character,
replacing a standard, gimmicky vigilante with a thought-provoking new
entity entirely.

Gaiman's story is brilliantly and expressively told through the art of
Dave McKean. McKean employs very little color in his art -- most of
the characters and settings are painted in shades of grey. Orchid
moves through her drab surroundings in hues of purple. Other colors
accent the landscape -- glints of light, flecks of blood, shades of
leaves.

Black Orchid is a beautiful tale, though at times violent, and I
wonder why this character has been ignored in the years since its
release. She deserves to see the light of day again. Soon.

Violent Cases

Mr Punch

McKean's art elevates the visuals above the basic flat 2D of most
comics, most impressively his use of photographic elements, adding
depth and a sense of realism. It more than compliments Gaiman's
writing, demonstrating yet again why these two are one of the best
creative teams in comics. McKean's work here is still some of the best
of his career - sharp, inventive and captivating. The whole design of
the book is something to behold, right down the twisting fonts,
showing why he is the arguably the best when it comes to doing what he
does, as well as the most prone to 'homage'.

Having the Punch and Judy puppets as the only "real" elements (apart
from backgrounds and props) is a masterstroke. Mr Punch himself is a
terrifying figure, a puppet, all pointy angles and staring eyes. Even
his speech, larger than the other fonts, stands out against smears of
white as he laughs and taunts. "That's the way to do it!" The
characters are, for the most part, painted, except in the case of
reflections, in photographs and half-recalled memories.

When the narrator is seen in the present day, it is in shadow (another
form of puppetry), a silhouette through gauze, and mostly at funerals
or weddings, the beginning and the ends of families. Most
tantalisingly is the back cover of the book, where a small boy lies
sleeping, helping the phantasmagorical atmosphere along. This
combination of words and pictures create such an engrossing world that
we are sucked right in, sometimes uncomfortably as we witness the
exploits of the clearly mad Mr Punch and the parallels in life.

Gaiman has said that MR PUNCH is the work he is most proud of, which,
looking at his body of work, is saying something. It's a dark and
unsettling look at how we perceive that strange and exciting time
known as childhood long after we've grown up.

And that's the way to do it.

The Wolves in the Walls

Truth be told, Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean's picture book The Wolves
in the Walls is terrifying. Sure, the story is fairytale-like and
presented in a jaunty, casually nonsensical way, but it is absolutely
the stuff of nightmares. Lucy hears wolves hustling, bustling,
crinkling, and crackling in the walls of the old house where her
family lives, but no one believes her. Her mother says it's mice, her
brother says bats, and her father says what everyone seems to say, "If
the wolves come out of the walls, it's all over." Lucy remains
convinced, as is her beloved pig-puppet, and her worst fears are
confirmed when the wolves actually do come out of the walls.

Up to this point, McKean's illustrations are spectacular, sinister
collages awash in golden sepia tones evocative of the creepy beauty in
The City of Lost Children. The wolves explode into the story in
scratchy pen-and-ink, all jaws and eyes. The family flees to the cold,
moonlit garden, where they ponder their future. (Her brother suggests,
for example, that they escape to outer space where there's "nothing
but foozles and squossucks for billions of miles.") Lucy wants to live
in her own house...and she wants the pig-puppet she left behind.

Eventually she talks her family into moving back into the once-wolfish
walls, where they peek out at the wolves who are watching their
television and spilling popcorn on slices of toast and jam, dashing up
the stairs, and wearing their clothes. When the family can't stand it
anymore, they burst forth from the walls, scaring the wolves, who
shout, "And when the people come out of the walls, it's all over!" The
wolves flee and everything goes back to normal...until the tidy ending
when Lucy hears "a noise that sounded exactly like an elephant trying
not to sneeze." Adult fans of this talented pair will revel in the
quirky story and its darkly gorgeous, deliciously shadowy trappings,
but the young or faint of heart, beware! (Ages 9 and older)

The Sandman Collection

01 - Preludes & Nocturnes

Neil Gaiman's The Sandman was launched in 1989. This extremely popular
series was bound into ten collections. Featuring Dream of the Endless.
There are seven brothers and sisters that have been since the
beginning of time, the Endless. They are Destiny, Death, Dream,
Desire, Despair, Delirium who was once Delight, and Destruction, the
one who turned his back on his duties.

Preludes and Nocturnes begins the series. In it, Dream, escapes his
prison. He must go on a quest to find the tools of his office, his
helm, pouch and ruby. The journey will take him - and us - through the
gates of hell itself. It will also teach Dream an important lesson
about relying on tools, and introduce us to the other star of the
series, Death.

02 - The Dolls House

The immense popularity of Neil Gaiman's Sandman series is due in large
part to the development of his characters. In The Doll's House, the
second book of the Sandman magnum opus, Gaiman continues to build the
foundation for the larger story, introducing us to more of the Dream
King's family of the Endless.

The Sandman returns to his kingdom of the Dreaming after nearly a
century of imprisonment, finding several things out of place; most
importantly, an anomaly called a dream vortex has manifested itself in
the form of a young girl who unknowingly threatens to rip apart the
Dreaming. And there's the smaller matter of a few nightmares having
escaped. Among them is Gaiman's creepiest creation: the Corinthian, a
serial killer with a miniature set of teeth in each eye socket.
Because later volumes concentrate so much on human relationships with
Gaiman's signature fair for fantasy and mythology, it is sometimes
easy to forget that the Sandman series started out as a horror comic.
This book grabs you and doesn't let you forget that so easily.

03 - Dream Country

The third book of the Sandman collection is a series of four short
comic book stories. What's remarkable here (considering the publisher
and the time that this was originally published) is that the main
character of the book--the Sandman, King of Dreams--serves only as a
minor character in each of these otherwise unrelated stories.[cut]
(Actually, he's not even in the last story.) This signaled a couple of
important things in the development of what is considered one of the
great comics of the second half of the century. First, it marked a
distinct move away from the horror genre and into a more fantasy-rich,
classical mythology-laden environment. And secondly, it solidly
cemented Neil Gaiman as a storyteller. One of the stories here, "A
Midsummer Night's Dream," took home the World Fantasy Award for best
short story--the first time a comic was given that honor. But for my
money, another story in Dream Country has it beat hands down. "A Dream
of a Thousand Cats" has such hope, beauty, and good old-fashioned
chills that rereading it becomes a welcome pleasure.

04 - Season of Mists

In many ways, Season of Mists is the pinnacle of the Sandman
experience. After a brief intermission of four short stories
(collected as Dream Country) Gaiman continued the story of the Dream
King that he began in the first two volumes. Here in volume 4, we find
out about the rest of Dream's Endless family (Desire, Despair,
Destiny, Delirium, Death, and a seventh missing sibling). We find out
the story behind Nada, Dream's first love, whom we met only in passing
during Dream's visit to hell in the first book. When Dream goes back
to hell to resolve unfinished business with Nada, he finds her missing
along with all of the other dead souls. The answer to this mystery
lies in Lucifer's most uncharacteristic decision--a delicious
surprise.

There is something grandiose about this story, in which each chapter
ends with such suspense and drive to read the next. This book is best
summed up by a toast taken from the second chapter: "To absent
friends, lost loves, old gods, and the season of mists; and may each
and every one of us always give the devil his due."

05 - A Game of You

You may have heard somewhere that Neil Gaiman's Sandman series
consisted of cool, hip, edgy, smart comic books. And you may have
thought, "What the hell does that mean?" Enter A Game of You to
confound the issue even more, while at the same time standing as a
fine example of such a description. This is not an easy book. The
characters are dense and unique, while their observations are, as
always with Gaiman, refreshingly familiar. Then there's the plot,
which grinds along like a coffee mill, in the process breaking down
the two worlds of this series, that of the dream and that of the
dreamer. Gaiman pushes these worlds to their very extremes--one is a
fantasy world with talking animals, a missing princess, and a
mysterious villain called the Cuckoo; the other is an urban microcosm
inhabited by a drag queen, a punk lesbian couple, and a New York doll
named Barbie. In almost every way this book sits at 180 degrees from
the earlier four volumes of the Sandman series--although the less it
seems to belong to the series, the more it shows its heart.

06 - Fables and Reflection

Perhaps the title of the book provides some clues to the over-arching
themes of these stories. However, there is more at hand than the
conflict between reality and fantasy that is to be expected in
anything whose main character is the bringer of dreams. In 'Fear of
Falling,' a young actor finds his courage in a frightening dream. And
in 'Three Septembers and a January,' we are given the tale of Joshua
Norton, the Emperor of the United States, who found happiness in the
give of insanity. Then it suddenly is July in revolutionary Paris.
Thermidor tells the story of a woman bearing the head of Orpheus, due
to sing the song that will end one dream and begin another.

Next, a book shows a werewolf lost in a dream of love the path to its
reality love. In 'August,' a Roman emperor gains the secret of how to
hide from his fears. 'Soft Places' finds Marco Polo wandering the
desert separated from his caravan. Or perhaps, he is only wandering in
his mind. The grand piece of the book is a lengthy retelling of the
legend of Orpheus, which provides some explanation for the future
wanderings of his disembodied head. In 'Parliament of Rooks,' the
arguments of Cain and Abel invade the sleep of a young child. In the
final story Haroun al Raschid, the ruler of Baghdad, bargains with the
Lord of Dreams for a special kind of eternity.

All the stories are linked by theme and variation, as well as the
presence of the Sandman. Perhaps, intentionally, the relationships are
vague and hard to pin down, using the touch of chaos to enhance the
dreamlike quality. Of course, the advantage is to the author, who
needs to tell only enough to keep the reader interested. In addition
to the drawn illustrations, the book makes excellent use of digital
and photographic work to enhance the effect of the stories themselves.
The overall design, the product of Dave McKean, is remarkable,
enhancing instead of competing with the stories themselves.

07 - Brief Lives

Delirium, the youngest of the Endless, who was once Delight, needs a
change. She decides to find her missing "prodigal" brother. She begs
Dream to accompany her and surprisingly, (for reasons we don't
discover til later) he agrees. But their prodigal brother is none
other than Destruction, and as Dream and Delirium soon learn, few can
seek Destruction unscathed. One of Gaiman's many skills is the use of
doublespeak, and this story is no exception. It is a brilliant
interplay of past accounts and current journeys, mirroring each other.

"What's the name of the word for things not being the same
always.....there must be a word for it. The thing that let's you know
time is happening. Is there a word?"

"Change" replies Dream, and that is the basis for this story. It marks
the realization of what Dream boths needs and yet cannot accomplish -
he must change to survive, or cast about the seeds of his own future
destruction.

"Brief Lives" is the glory of an already impeccable series. It is for
me, the jewel in the crown of the entire Sandman saga. It manages to
be haunting, thrilling and hysterical all at the same time.

08 - Worlds End

Like Fables and Recollections and Dream Country, World's End is a
collection of individual stories that have little do with the Sandman
arc. Unlike its predecessors, however, there is greater continuity
between the stories.
The stories within World's End are all linked to a singular event:
travelers gathering 'round and exchanging their weirdest, most
interesting tales (admittedly, an almost done-to-death literary
device). Gaiman breathes new life into this convention by inserting a
dizzying amount of layers into the storytelling function. In a
wonderfully witty Introduction, Stephen King compares the collection
to "nested Chinese boxes:" stories existing within stories within
stories. Gaiman really flexes his writing muscles here, constructing
highly imaginative parallel universes that eerily mirror our own world
(fans of Gaiman will note that "A Tale of Two Cities" borrows heavily
from the essay he wrote for the SIMCITY 2000 game). He also inserts
his most shocking plot twist to date at the end of the book, which
forms the basis of the last two books on the Sandman collection and is
guaranteed to pique the continued interest of the Sandman readership.

I really enjoyed the diversity of the art; to note, the visually
arresting rectangular and vertically arranged panels done by Alec
Stevens in the aforementioned lead story "A Tale of Two Cities;" John
Watkiss' crispness and use of clean lines; the tasteful, subdued tones
of Michael Zulli and frequent Sandman collaborator Dick Giordano in
"Hob's Leviathan."

09 - The Kindly Ones

Simply put, "The Kindly Ones" is a study of Morpheus' collapse, and,
as such, follows the conventions of tragedy. And in true tragic
fashion, Morpheus' downfall is precipitated from within: in this case,
an unerring commitment to his office and the responsibilities
contained therein, even when adhering to those principles ensures his
inevitable demise. Clever as he is, Gaiman never truly indicates why
Dream so resolutely marches towards this fate: is Morpheus punishing
himself for the sins of his past; does he believe we all have
predestined ends, and his particular position obligates him to make
choices consistent with it, consequences be damned; is he simply not
as insightful as he appears, and naively making choices that are
destroying him? Although, by this point, he has appeared in nine
volumes, Dream continues to elude facile generalizations of his
character and remains deliciously enigmatic. Even the lot of Morpheus
at the end of this volume is uncertain; death and life appearing to be
rather fluid and interchangeable concepts, much like the ankh symbol
worn by his adorable, and equally paradoxical, older sister, Death.

As Mikal Gilmore notes in this insightful Introduction to "The Wake,"
the title not only points to those 'kindly' ladies, the Furies, but
others whose acts of kindness (Hippolyta, Thessaly, even Morpheus)
similarly precipitate Morpheus' fall, either purposely or not. It is
remarkable Gaiman has constructed a character whose humanization and
kindness eventually destroys him. You certainly won't find this level
of psychological sophistication in your average run-of-the-mill comic
title or novel.

This volume gets my vote for the pick of the series; not an easy task
when you consider the immense quality of its predecessors. But there's
a sense of urgency in the unfolding of the plot, a self-awareness that
things are coming to an end, leading to the inescapable conclusion
that this title is the crescendo of the Sandman library. All the
unresolved plotlines in the earlier volumes flourish here and result
in the climactic conclusion. We learn that the fate of Morpheus is
intertwined with the fate of the series itself, and I for one can't
think of a more appropriate ending.

10 - The Wake

This collection concludes the original run of the Sandman. It is a
fitting finish to the series, with enjoyable stories and some
remarkable artwork.

John Muth's "Exiles" is next to last in the book, and is a real treat.
Part of its topic, an extreme of loyalty, is quielty touching. The
look of this piece, however, is what makes it, ink-drawing in a style
inspired by Asian classics. The style is quite unlike the watercolors
that Muth has used so well (e.g. in Moonshadow), except in its
wonderful expressiveness.

The final piece in this book, "The Tempest" returns to an earlier
story and Shakespeare and concludes it. Charles Vess illustrated this
in the manner of which he is master: elegant pen work and muted color.

"Wake" is a satisfying end to the original series. Even after the
series' long run, it maintains the highest standards of artwork and
storytelling. If you enjoy comics at all, you're sure to enjoy this.

Batman - Arkham Asylum

Arkham Asylum goes beyond just comic and comic book cliches and
standards. It is, without doubt, the most complex and sophiscated
graphic story treatment ever given to a superhero. Reading this 15
years ago, it sent a chill up my spine. Now it just envelopes me
totally.

Morrison's writing is so deep, so rich that it's almost like a
exploration of the complicated insanities that exist within the Batman
and his numerous foes. But beyond this rich tapestry of psychological
drama that unfoldes, is an outstanding backstory of Amadeus Arkham. At
once tragic and haunting, it gives the reader a profound sense of
understanding and appreciation of this most famous instituion in
Gotham City.

If Morrison's writing is graphic literature as its supreme best, then
McKean's art is simply without peer in this medium. Using an arsenal
of styles and tools that includes paint and photography, McKean's
artwork will leave you more than just spellbound. It literally is
graphic art that is a masterpiece to behold. And this on every single
page.

Perhaps the only left to be said of this is to get the new 15th
Anniversary edition, which includes the original script and sketeches
that gives a further understanding to the complexity that went into
creating this masterpiece.

For myself, it will rank as the best Batman story, even above The Dark
Knight Returns, which I thought was unsurpassable. 15 years on, and
this remains the pinnacle in superhero storytelling.

V for Vendetta

Describing where V for Vendetta lies in the comics cannon is tricky.
Without wanting to over-state its importance, this particular reviewer
considers it as fascinating and enjoyable a piece of serious science
fiction as George Orwell's 1984 and Rildey Scott's Blade Runner. On
our first reading, over 10 years ago, it really felt that big, that
important and that much of a classic. Rereading it, despite the fact
that the dark near-future predictions remain thankfully off mark, the
distopian vision remains as horrific and potent as ever.
V for Vendetta

We won't expose too much of the story, as the unfurling mystery is a
roller-coaster ride of twists and turns. It's set in a fascist,
post-apocalyptic Britain, with a cowed population ruled by a police
state that, like Orwell's, is always watching. Like a modern day Guy
Fawkes, the story's lead character (known only as 'V') is committed to
bringing down the government of his day. We see his plans unfold
through the eyes of Evey Hammond, an innocent and impressionable young
woman V rescues from the clutches the corrupt police force.

Because all culture is controlled by the state, V is a cultural oasis,
allowing Moore to flex his erudite muscles, quoting liberally from
literature, music and other media. This can be overwhelming at times,
though it serves the purpose of enhancing the stark difference between
the sparse official media controlled by the state and church, and the
rich cultural heritage that is kept hidden from the populace.

David Lloyd uses gorgeous subtle shading throughout the book, creating
a gloomy London bathed in an inky wash. At times this can evoke a
sense of noir thirties nostalgia, again showing the debt it owes to
George Orwell, while simultaneously twisting everything into a gloomy
futuristic world of overt control.

This is book has an eloquence and beauty to it, stemming from both the
writing and the artwork, both of which are at the peak of their craft.
The book remains one of Alan Moore's finest works, no mean feat
considering we consider Moore to be up there amongst the all-time best
writers to grace comics with their work. If you're interested in the
medium, this book is an absolute must. And if you're new to comics,
this provides an excellent place to start for anyone who likes edgy
science fiction thrillers, especially if they like their sci-fi to
come with a little politics, a little culture and the odd explosion.

Watchmen

It may seem hard to imagine today, but back in 1985, nobody was
particularly familiar with the idea of superheroes with human
emotions, psychological problems, or anything other than square jaws
and simple morals. Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's Watchmen helped
change all that. It's a story about ordinary people who, by design or
accident, decide to wear costumes and fight crime. The resulting
alternate future turns the superhero genre on its head, questioning
the validity of caped crusaders in a realistic world spanning 50
years.

Watchmen is an extraordinary piece of work. It is designed to be read
at least twice - there's no way you could get the most out of this in
one reading, as so much is built up before we have a chance of
noticing it. On first read, you may find yourself smacked in the face
by an awesome ending. Second time through, you'll wonder how you could
have missed all those clues.
Watchmen

Every cut in the action is linked to the next scene, often with
overlapping dialogue and meaning. Symbols, from pyramids to the
famously defaced smiley, pervade the artwork, providing visual
references to the story's themes. Images as simple and everyday as
falling objects are laden with depths of meaning by a process of
association and repetition, so that reading the book and piecing
everything together is a blatant intellectual challenge to the reader.
Pulling together the strands of the book as you read through is as
satisfying as completing the last clue in a crossword or placing the
final piece in a jigsaw puzzle.

The book is aimed at people who are familiar with the superhero genre,
as there's a lot of stuff in here that those with little knowledge of
the medium will be forced to ignore. Because the book deconstructs the
genre, a working knowledge of it is essential. This means it isn't
particularly accessible to the beginner and, despite its deserved
classic status, it would not be an easy starter for someone unused to
the form.

From Hell

The mad, shaggy genius of the comics world dips deeply into the well
of history and pulls up a cup filled with blood in From Hell. Alan
Moore did a couple of Ph.D.'s worth of research into the Whitechapel
murders for this copiously annotated collection of the independently
published series.

The web of facts, opinion, hearsay, and imaginative invention draws
the reader in from the first page. Eddie Campbell's scratchy ink
drawings evoke a dark and dirty Victorian London and help to humanize
characters that have been caricatured into obscurity for decades.

Moore, having decided that the evidence best fits the theory of a
Masonic conspiracy to cover up a scandal involving Victoria's
grandson, goes to work telling the story with relish from the point of
view of the victims, the chief inspector, and the killer--the Queen's
physician. His characterization is just as vibrant as Campbell's; even
the minor characters feel fully real. Looking more deeply than most,
the author finds in the "great work" of the Ripper a ritual magic
working intended to give birth to the 20th century in all its horrid
glory.

Maps, characters, and settings are all as accurate as possible, and
while the reader might not ultimately agree with Moore and Campbell's
thesis, From Hell is still a great work of literature.

Batman - The Killing joke

*Batman: The Killing Joke*, apart from being Tim Burton's favorite
comic book, is Alan Moore's most concentrated achievement (working in
a shorter format), and, rare amongst adolescent passions, gives me the
same pleasure today as it did when I was a wee boy. It is a dark,
visual poem, running the gamut from high episodic drama to an
interesting attempt at sentimentalism in its (definitive?) portrayal
of the Batman/Joker dichotomy. Sure, Moore often falls back on trite
phrases and mechanical epithets, but the book's strengths far outweigh
my elitist quibbles, both in conception, writing, and visual delivery.

Illustrator Brian Bolland has touched the limits of what can be done
in the mainstream comic medium, surpassing even Dave Gibbons in
*Watchmen* (that undisputed *Citizen Kane* of graphic novels). I've
counted roughly 230 individuated facial expressions in this book's 48
pages, every cameo and minor character penciled, inked, colored,
storyboarded into life, the backdrops brimming with nuance and
articulated detail, the coloring as lurid and suggestive as Steven
Soderbergh's color-coded triple-narrative in *Traffic*. The Joker
alone is granted 62 articulated facial expressions (19 during the
course of his pre-Joker psychodrama), ranging from bright, sportive
lunacy (each facial shot individuated) to an almost genuine grief and
sadness towards the end. The spinal-paralytic Barbara Gordon, who
appears in only 26 panels, is granted a dramatic reality remarkable
given her minor role in the story. The portrait of her staring in
bemused horror at the Joker (standing in the hallway with Hawaiian
shirt, camera, and revolver), while the scene turns "orange" in
anticipation of bloodshed, is the most memorable facial expression
I've ever seen rendered in a comic book. As a close runner-up, the
Joker's hang-dog look on page 41, as he asks Batman sincerely, "Why
aren't you laughing?", is the only *convincing* moment of unfeigned
sadness the Joker has ever given us, in any comic book.

Maus A Survivors Tale.

Winner of the Pulitzer prize for literature, Art Spiegelman's "Maus: A
Survivor's Tale" is a unique and unforgettable work. This two-volume
set of book-length comics (or "graphic novels," if you prefer) tells
the story of the narrator, Artie, and his father Vladek, a Holocaust
survivor. "Maus" is thus an important example of both Holocaust
literature and of the graphic novel. The two volumes of "Maus" are
subtitled "My Father Bleeds History" and "And Here My Troubles Began";
they should be read together to get the biggest impact.

Artie is a comic book artist who is trying to create art that is
meaningful, not just commercial. As the two volumes of "Maus" unfold,
he gradually learns the full story of his father's history as a Jewish
survivor of the World War II Holocaust. There is a complex "book
within the book" motif, since the main character is actually writing
the book that we are reading. This self-referentiality also allows
Spiegelman to get in some satiric material.
The distinguishing conceit of "Maus" involves depicting the books'
humanoid characters as having animal heads. All the Jews have mice
heads, the Germans are cats, the Americans dogs, etc. It is a visually
provocative device, although not without problematic aspects. To his
credit, Spiegelman addresses some of the ambiguities of this visual
device in the course of the 2 volumes. For example, Artie's wife, a
Frenchwoman who converted to Judaism, wonders what kind of animal head
she should have in the comic.
"Maus" contains some stunning visual touches, as well as some truly
painful and thought-provoking dialogue. Vladek is one of the most
extraordinary characters in 20th century literature. As grim as the
two books' subject matter is, there are some moments of humor and
warmth. Overall, "Maus" is a profound reflection on family ties,
history, memory, and the role of the artist in society.

Tintin in Thailand is a 60 page comic done by some "fans". It's not good at all, and my verdict is that it's pretty shitty, but it's only 3 MB so you might just want to take a look.

I'm not really sure if these are any good. Just found them at Joystiq.com. The authors claims that it's a "a cyberpunk-themed graphic novel" and the first one to be designed specifically for the PSP display.
